As powerful as SSI is, the technology is limited to individuals who have digital access and the legal and mental capacity to act for themselves, both online and offline. For SSI to work for everyone, guardianship needs to be designed and governed in an accessible, responsible and safe way.
This whitepaper, written by the Sovrin Foundation Guardianship Working Group, is for policy and decision-makers, designers, lawyers, software developers, identity professionals and others who want to learn how guardianship is handled in SSI. The paper explores guardianship as an important feature of SSI, introduces key terms and states why SSI needs guardianship.
