Press release: Sovrin Foundation, Ontology, and Evernym collaborate on interoperable decentralized identity networks

October 23, 2018

Today we are excited to announce a collaborative partnership with Evernym and Ontology to co-develop our blockchain-based technologies, together helping advance self sovereign digital identity for all. This work aims to support the interoperability of our respective digital identity networks and we hope to eventually provide a seamless identity management experience for identity holders worldwide.

Ontology is a new high-performance public multi-chain project and a distributed trust collaboration platform. Their cutting-edge work in the blockchain space combined with the products coming out of Evernym is the recipe for incredible advancements for the decentralized digital identity space.

Evernym is a well-known self sovereign identity industry technology pioneer and longstanding supporter of the Sovrin Foundation. The Utah-based developer is the original Sovrin Founding Steward and credited with designing, building and subsequent donation of the initial code for the Sovrin Network to the non profit and independently governed, Sovrin Foundation. Today, Evernym helps organizations and individuals implement, manage and utilize self-sovereign identity.

Together, Evernym, Ontology, and the Sovrin Foundation will coordinate development around the use of decentralized identifiers (DIDs) for verifiable credentials. Representatives from Evernym and the Sovrin Foundation assisted the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in the creation this internet-wide digital identity standard. The Sovrin Network is developing technology for identity holders to use DIDs for both secure off-ledger network connections and for anchoring identity to the public ledger. This could give identity holders the power to collect and share their personal data via cryptographically secure channels.

Collaboration is a core value for the Sovrin Foundation which unites more than 50 Sovrin Stewards and a thriving community of developers working to advance the open source code for the Sovrin Network. Sovrin Stewards are a diverse group organizations from around the globe that volunteer time and resources to operate the validator nodes required for keep the Sovrin Network secure.

The Sovrin Foundation is also a member of Hyperledger, an open source effort hosted by the Linux Foundation that exists to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies.

For those interested in joining the Sovrin Foundation or contributing technically, getting started with Sovrin is easy.
