Summary

The Sovrin Trust Framework is the legal foundation of the Sovrin Network as a global public utility for self-sovereign identity. It is developed by the Sovrin Trust Framework Working Group, currently chaired by Sovrin trustee Drummond Reed, and each new version is approved by the Sovrin Foundation Board of Trustees to become the official set of governance documents for the operation of the Sovrin ledger.

Revision History

v 1.1 Provisional – 28 Jun 2017

v 1.0 Provisional – 22 Mar 2017

The first version of the Trust Framework is called the Provisional Trust Framework (PTF) because it governs the first stage of the Sovrin Network, called the Provisional Network, which officially launched on 31 July 2017. During this stage the network is live and transactions on the ledger are permanent, but the network is still undergoing hardening and scalability testing before it reaches the general availability stage.

The next version of the Sovrin Trust Framework is called the General Availability Trust Framework (GATF). This is the version that will take effect once the Sovrin Foundation Board of Trustees, the Sovrin Technical Governance Board, and the Founding Stewards all concur that the Provisional Network is ready to graduate to the General Availability Network.

Work on the GATF is currently underway. The following three Google docs are “living versions” of the PDF documents listed above. This is where the Trust Framework Working Group is accepting public comments. These are not the authoritative Provisional Trust Framework documents—those are the PDFs above. Please feel free to make comments or suggestions directly in these Google docs (all available in this Google folder):

  1. Sovrin Trust Framework (live Google doc version)
