The Sovrin Foundation has been formally dissolved. While the organization is no longer operating, key elements of its legacy—including the Sovrin MainNet ledger and the information published on this site—remain available to the public.
This post explains what has changed, what remains, and the steps taken by the Board of Trustees to ensure a responsible and transparent wind-down of the Foundation’s affairs.
At the request of the Board of Trustees, the Sovrin Foundation was officially dissolved by the State of Utah on May 21, 2025.
The decision to dissolve the Sovrin Foundation followed an extended period of reduced activity and reflected the Board’s conclusion that the Foundation could no longer sustain its original mission in an operational capacity. The dissolution was carried out in accordance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
Although the Sovrin Foundation has been dissolved, Sovrin MainNet remains visible as a read-only archive.
Following a request for volunteers to take over the operation of the network, Trinsic agreed to act as the Caretaker of Sovrin MainNet. As part of this arrangement:
The ledger remains technically functional and fully queryable. While it is no longer operating as an active, multi-steward production network, it could, in theory, be reactivated should there be sufficient interest, resources, and governance to do so.
To support public access, indyscan.io is hosted alongside the ledger, providing a web-based interface for viewing ledger data. Want to see history? Browse the Sovrin MainNet!
A big thanks to Riley Hughes of Trinsic (and formerly of the Sovrin Foundation) for taking on the caretaker role and preserving history.
The Board of Trustees worked to ensure that the dissolution of the Sovrin Foundation was handled responsibly, transparently, and in the best interests of the broader community.
The Sovrin Foundation’s remaining financial resources were handled with care and transparency:
No funds were distributed to any Trustee. All work carried out by the Board of Trustees related to the operation and later dissolution of the Foundation was performed on a fully voluntary basis.
The Board ensured that the Foundation’s institutional record was preserved, including:
These archives exist to support transparency, accountability, and future reference.
Several steps were taken to ensure continued public access to Sovrin materials:
The dissolution of the Sovrin Foundation marks the end of one chapter in the history of decentralized identity, but it does not erase the work, ideas, or infrastructure that emerged from it.
Sovrin MainNet remains visible. The Governance Framework is still available. The historical record remains accessible. And the lessons learned—technical, organizational, and governance-related—continue to inform ongoing work across the decentralized identity ecosystem.
